30 years ago today......,
this is Spirit Lake Lodge
the mountain before it blew
This is the mountain errupting
and after!
WOW! Most of you won't remember this but it was a BIG deal way back when!! 30 years ago tomorrow (May 18)just after 8am with the force of atomic bombs Mt St. Helen's erupted!! I wrecked my very first car in the ash, and it was pretty much the last day as a Senior in High school that we went to school, (they weren't sure of the dangers of the ash so we didn't go) Harry Truman became a celebrity by rufusing to leave the Spirit Lake lodge, which took his life when the mountain blew. I was ready to take life by the tails and show it a thing or two! "Call Me" by Blondie was the number one hit on the radio, "Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back" was a huge hit at the box office. Styles were crazy and "Big Hair" was a must!! Oh my!! Good Times!!
Happy Mt. St. Helens Day!
Nadine
Wow! That is amazing. Crazy to see how it changed!

I remember it well! I was in California at the time and kept in contact with my grandma in Portland Oregon/she was telling me how the ask was covering everything! I was visiting Yosemite at the time. I never left... so it's my 30th anniversary of living here!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love your Lake!
ReplyDeleteWow! It is hard to believe it has been 30 years since that happened. We were living in Alaska at the time and we got ash up there. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI remember it. I was in first grade and our principal thought it was BIG news, so we were all called to the gym where we sat on the floors and watched the news coverage on a TV. I remember how gorgeous the sunsets were with all the ash and smoke in the air, and even here in Utah, a thousand miles away, it snowed ash.
ReplyDeleteI remember that day it was a Sunday I was in a Morning briefing at McChord AFB at 7am someone came in the room and announced the mountain had blown. I lived in Eastern Washington at the time and the cloud of ash was moving East so the airports where closed I stayed in Tacoma 3 days and then got home only to find out that my then boyfriend and his friends had been driving my car through the ashe... Although I got 90,000 miles on that Datsun B210 I ditch the boyfiend. I am sure I could have gotten another 30,000. I didn't have a stash of fabric back then. But I did buy some beautiful pottery that had been glazed with the volcano ashe. 30 years goes fast.
ReplyDeleteWow...this post really brings back the memories...I had an aunt and Uncle in Portland at the time and remember all of the stories about the ash...and remember just like it was yesterday when those songs and movies were new!
ReplyDeleteI was comping on the mountain when it blew. No kidding. We got evacuated, and most of the ash blew east and up. We were camping on the west side. It was crazy. I am much older than you, so I was a freshman in college, home for the break when it happened. You just a young high school senior.
ReplyDeleteI was only 8, but I sure do remember it - we were living out west at the time. Scary stuff!
