Ouch!!

I love to read so when they came out with the Nook and Kindle I was elated.  My sweet hubby bought me the Kindle, it was love at first sight!!!  I had, had it for about 2 years and I broke it.  I read every night to go to sleep so when it broke I went into panic mode, YIKES! how was I supposed to sleep without reading?  I could get a new Kindle but it would take 2 days to get to me.  So, I decided to race over to my Barnes and Noble and get the Nook color.  I have had it for about 4 1/2 months and today while letting my dogs out back, I bumped it on the door knob, it slipped out of my hand, down 3 steps, and across the pavement.  Luckily, I had purchased an insurance plan with it, but when I called to ask about it  they told me they replace it with a refurbished one, hmmm, I am so not sure how I feel about this.  So, if that is the case should I purchase the Kindle Fire?  What e-reader do you have?  Favorite one?

andes mint cookies

So this isn't a true tutorial, but they are delicious.  I made them on Saturday and took them to Nadine and Shelby.  Nadine called me and said I had to post this recipe.  I will admit I got it off of pinterest.  They were super simple to make and everyone who has tried them wants the recipe so here it is.

Andes Mint cookies

1 Devil's Food Cake Mix
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs
1 package of Andes Mints

Mix cake mix, oil, and eggs together. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 6-9 minutes.(they will loo and feel mushy but will firm up when cooled) Don't cook any longer than that! You don't want them to be overdone!
Take sheet out of oven and while the cookies are still very hot, place an Andes Mint on top of each cookie. In about 5 minutes, the mint will be melted. Take a spoon and smooth out each mint like frosting.

Silhouette Cameo Cutter

Of course, I had to have a pink tote to put it in
Okay, I admit it,  I have an obsession with cutters, there I said it!!  I swear I own every one out there (no exaggeration.)  When I went to the Craft and Hobby show in San Diego a few weeks ago,  I couldn't help but be drawn to the Silhouette Cameo booth,  It was packed every time I walked by!!  Hmmmm,  I tried to resist but, curiosity got the better of me and before I knew it there I was oohing and ahhing over it all.  The next thing  I knew  I had my credit card out and had purchased one and all the little goodies to go with it.  So, today my trusty sidekick Chris, and I met at the shop and got to play!!  I am in Love!!!  We created a cute iron on transfer for her little boy, so cute!!  We cut fabric with it, and it sliced through it like butter!!
Oh, Silhouette I love you!!

Wonky House Block Swap

A couple of months ago Shelby thought it would be a good idea if we got involved in an online block swap.   I enthusiastically said "Yes, and voiced how fun it would be"  Well, in my true procrastination style,  I put it off and the blocks are due at the end of the month.  So, today I spent the entire day sewing my wonky houses (12 of them and 12 signature blocks),  I love them they are so much fun to make.  Here are a couple of the blocks we have and I will post pictures of more of both Shelby an I's later.
This might become my new addiction.  Sorry the pictures aren't the greatest!

Enjoy!!

Bling it with Brassy Apple

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of being a "guest poster" on the Brassy Apple  Thanks so much Megan you are a doll!  This is our post from there.  Check Megan's blog for lots of great DIY jewelry posts this month. So, let's get started and again "Thanks Megan!!"
I am Nadine from the Material Girls Quilts.  I am so excited and a little in awe that I am doing a post for Brassy Apple. I have been a blog stalker of hers for sometime (don't tell her).   A little about me,  I own a quilt shop in South Jordan Utah, and yes, I do have the greatest job in the world.  I love anything crafty, spray painty, glue gunnish,  and thrift stores!!  However, my first love is fabric.  I have 2 kids, one girl Shelby age 20 who works in the shop with me, and Parker age 18, who swears when he gets married that she won't even own a glue gun (not if I have any say!)   and one fantastic, supportive hubby!  When I saw that Megan was looking for contributors for jewelry I knew exactly what I wanted to post.  I am sure most of you have seen all the resin flowers and what not floating around blogland.  If not, I am going to show you!  I bought my molds for the cameo, (which I might add I am in love with cameos right now) and flowers (lots of flowers) off of Etsy.  I bought the resin from the actual company.   So,  Lets get started.....,

There are a lot of different resins on the market

I bought my molds off of Etsy, there again there are a ton to chose from

Fill the mold right to the top of the design, with the mixture of resin and the dye.

The resin takes about 5 minutes or so to harden.

Once the resin hardens it will pop right out of your mold

I added my cameo to a jewelry blank, I prefer a pin but didn't have the right size.  I glued it in and then on to a circle of wool felt.

I then cut two 3 inch strips of a linen like fabric called Prairie Cloth.

I chose to do a wrapped flower, you could do whatever you like.  Tie a knot in the end of your strip and twist and wrap it around the knot gluing it as you go.  I use a fast drying fabric glue called Fabri-Tac.  I wrapped it until I had a flower about 2 inches in diameter.

I then glued it where I wanted it, this is where it is nice to have the felt circle to adhere it to.

For the second wrapped flower,  I decided to add a little color, so as I was wrapping it I wrapped a piece of embroidery thread, you could use ribbon, rick rack or any type of bling you want.  If you didn't use a pin blank, you will have to add a pin, you can use a safety pin, just make sure to glue it well.

This is where you can let your personality shine girls!  I added, pearls, and a little brass button, with a chiffon wrapped flower.  Be creative here!

Walah!!  Add it to your favorite sweater,  headband, purse or whatever and get your SWAG on!!

Thanks so much,
Nadine!

felt wreath tutorial

I am currently obsessed with wreaths.  I loved how my front window looked with my christmas wreath in it.  So this year I said I would make a wreath for each month and hang it in the front window...hence the wreath tutorials that will pop up.   This is my March wreath, but it is adorable out of any colors.

Felt Wreath Tutorial

Needed
Foam Wreath
Felt scraps
Pins or glue
ribbon or something to hang it up with

Cut your felt scraps into 3 inch by 6 inch strips.  I cut one edge with my pinking shears to give it a fun edge.  You could use the decorative scissors also to get even more fancy.

Wrap the felt around the wreath and secure the seam in the back.  I used 2 pins, but gluing it works just as well.

when you get to the end, flip your first strip up and slide the last one under so they overlap.

Yellow and Grey

I am starting a project today using these!!  I am so excited I just had to share it with you.  It will be transformed in to a "Darling" baby quilt, hopefully  by the end of the day!!  I will post pictures soon!!

Scissor Sharpening

Mac the Scissor guy will be back on Saturday February 18th from 10 to 3. Drop off will be from 10 to 3 and pick them up by 8pm.

When he was in the shop last time he had several comments about not being able to sharpen and fix some very "loved" scissors.  He was able to sharpen and restore all of them that came his way. His favorite line is  if you haven't cut barbed wire with them, he can probably fix them.  So if you have a pair of scissors that are very loved and have knicks, dirty, rusty, or any other issues bring them in and if he can't fix them he won't charge you.

Mac can sharpen all types of scissors.  Regular, pinking shears, batting shears, nippers...you bring it in and he will look at them and try.  He made my nippers able to cut through fabric (not just thread), my regular scissors can cut through 32 layers, and my pinking can cut 4 layers.

For same day service his prices are $10 for one pair, $15 dollars for 2 pair. If you have a specialty pair bring them in and he will quote you a price when he looks at them.  Mac only takes cash so please have some on hand with you.

Drop off and pick up...what?  I thought I better explain this better.  It takes Mac 15 minutes per scissor.  He handles this on a first come first serve basis.  So the earlier you drop them off, the sooner they will be done.  But so he isn't there all night sharpening, he will stop accepting scissors at 3.  He will have everything done and ready by 8pm.

And thank you to all who came last time he was in the shop.  Thanks for making him feel so welcome.
