You are in a giving mood!! I don't ever see #1 win, but what the heck. I think my first embroidery was a saying on a small piece of fabric that was turned into a quilt for my cousins wedding. My apologies to her, didn't know what I was doing. I still embroider here and there, they've got some cute patterns!

My mom taught me to stitch- I started out on vintage dish towels (remember those iron on patterns?) I think I made a whole set for her Christmas present after I got going.

I went to a convent school so the nuns taught us to embroider and it was a cushion cover with blanket stitch and stem stitch and took me ages.

My first project was a dresser scarf with a large basket of flowers on either end and I was about eleven years old. I can remember sitting on the front stoop with my mom as she taught me how to embroider, but most of all I remember the story she told about who had taught her at my age, it was one of her favorite stories.

When my mother was about 11 years old she would walk home from school past the garbage cans of an old woman that were overflowing with thread, yarn and fabric scraps. One day she got enough nerve to open one of the cans and steal the scraps. This went on for a few days until finally the woman yelled out at her, "Little girl, now there is no need to steal. If you want I can teach you the proper way to use all of those things. Ask your mother's permission, and be here tomorrow promptly after school".

And so began my mother's lessons. This woman was tough. She would constantly pull the needle from her little fingers to gauge the tension. "You must keep your tension loose, fingers strong but relaxed,” she would say. She taught her how to knit, embroider and sew. My mother became a gifted seamstress, sharing her talents with so many and this was the one story that I included in her eulogy about which part of us lives on, the part where we share our gifts.

My grandmother taught me when i was 6. She let me do a kitchen towel that we ironed a chicken on. I have since taught several children but my most valued one was my son. He was diagnosed with ADD and I tried to find something that he could focus on and still be quite. I am holding the little beagle for prosperity or until he gets married. He's 22 and while he doesn't stitch any more he doesn't hesitate to fix ripped things or fix hems.

My grandma tuaght me to embroider. My first project was hand towels that go in the kitchen that are labeled with the days of the week. My mom would also trace pictures from coloring books on to fabric for us to embroider.

Nice patterns. Embroidery is my first sewing love and I have done a lot of it. I think the first was my mom's initials which I embroidered on a potholder I made for her when I was about five. I used her maiden name initials because they spelled BREW and I thought that was cool. I'm not sure who taught me to embroider but it was probably my mother.

I think My first stiching was in my youth church group. I think it was a scripture saying, I do not have a great memory. Thanks for the giveaway.

I have never embroidered before but have always wanted to try. I love to have hand work to do when I am watching a movie or waiting for kids at school and this would be perfect. I have cross stitched before but don't like it much. Too much counting. I would love to have something to get me started!

My grandmother taught me how to stitch and the first project was a doily.....I think I still have it somewhere and whoa it's not very good!!! I still don't think I have mastered the stitching like she did but I do love doing it!!

My grandma who lived in Maine and New Hampshire taught me how to embroider on an apron at the tender age of 6.I still remember what color it was and the cute little basket that held the threads and hoop. What an impact that had on me!I love d her little front sewing room with the treadle machine.I have been enchanted ever since. My Sewing room overflows with fabric and projects somewhat done, started, finished and those who beggingly want me to start them. them. You see, they do whisper Talk and yell real loud at times

My grama Nellie taught me to embroider. I was in 5th grade and had been home sick a lot that winter and my grama was with there during the day to care for me. To help pass the time she taught me embroidery. My first project was to put my name on a jean purse she made for me.

My Grandma Annie taught me how to stitch. I have some of her iron on transfers that have a price of 5 cents on them! She also taught me how to crochet on my fingers. I loved sitting with her and learning. I never got the hang of crocheting and certainly can't crochet anything as beautiful as she made but I love the memories of sitting by her bed and learning. She lived with us and passed away of cancer when I was 9. Embroidery always reminds me of her bz they gave me her floss and the glass container it was in after she died. She was such a special lady.

Great new patterns. My grandmother taught me to embroider on flour sack dish towels. That was about fifty years ago and I still have an unused set that she embroidered. I can't bring myself to use them. She's been gone about thirty years.

My mother taught me how to cross stitch when I was seven. It was the first time I ever held a needle in my hand and I made a little gray elephant with a red heart ear. The first actual embroidery I ever did was on a pillowcase that I purchased a kit for at Wal-mart. I worked on it while I was on bed rest with my first pregnancy.

Oh I do love to stitch!! My mom showed me how to cross-stitch when I was younger, and before that it was latch hook. I don't remember my first of either projects, but my first stitchery pattern that I actually purchased myself was probably an "I Done My Best." The pumpkin bread recipe and gingerbread boys patterns are among my absolute favorites...

I have to say ditto to your post! My mother taught me to embroider and I bought pillowcases from the Woolworth's in downtown Minneapolis. After we moved my mom into a nursing home when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I found several sets of those pillowcases -- they are very precious to me now! Love your blog!

Heidi said...

Is it bad that I can't remember? It was either a towel or a pillowcase. My grandma got me in to embroidery.

PamKnits said...

I must have learned to stitch in Primary. But my favorite thing and which I have kept for 50 years now are the peacock pillowcases my grandmother embroidered.

I had to ace out two sisters to get those.

I LOVE Saundra's stitchery, I didn't know she had a new book out! What is it called? WHEN can I buy it? SOOOOO many questions

I had a neighbor teach me my first embroidery. It was a little wall hanging.
Such cute pillows!

I can't remember if I've ever done an embroidery project, but I've been wanting to try it. My mom taught me how to cross stitch when I was about 10. I'm pretty sure I made bookmarks or small kit projects. Recently I started x-stitching on linen and have thought about how interesting it would be to try some embroidery. I love the simplicity of these designs.

I have been embroidering since I was 5 years old. My grandmother taught me, probably to give me something to do to keep me out of her hair!!! It is my passion. My first project was a iron on duck transfer to a tea towel that I gave to my aunt. She gave it back to me a few years ago when I started teaching embroidery at my LQS. Let me tell you....I have come a long ways!!!

My mom taught my to sew and our first project was a little pillow for my doll. We then moved onto larger pillows with lace binding and then doll clothes until I was sewing things on my own. I went years without touching a needle except to hem or fix tears and then I suddenly got back into it and love it!

Gosh, I learned so long ago, I can't be certain. I was just a kid. Probably mom taught me. I remember working on a kit that was all kinds of flowers, on a loosely woven background. One of the flowers had a "turkey stitch" center. I don't think I ever finished that one. Have done tons more since, especially during college and after the birth of my twins.
Just added you to the blogs I follow.

I live to stitch :) I cross stitched a little yellow duck first, I think. My mom taught me how :)

Fond memories of my mom patiently teaching me to embroidery, especially the french knowt. I don't remember my very first project, being a perfectionist at a young age (6 or 7) I remember pulling out many stitches to complete a project. I made many pillowcase sets and tea towels for my hope chest. But alas gave them all away before my own wedding at age 20. I still have one uncompleted "sampler"

My Mom and Grandma taught me to stitch. We did the iron on ones and made a table runner for my hope chest. I was about 7 or 8. I still pull it out and remember sitting with each of them as they would work on their projects. Get memories!

I haven't done much stitching, but my first sewing lesson was from my grandma when I was 7 or 8 and she gave me a doll and little sewing kit. She taught me how to make clothes for the doll.

Mom taught me to cross stitch and that led to embrodiery. I don't remember what I made. (I didn't keep it) but I've made so many things since then. I've taught my 14 year old and am now teaching my 10 year old. It's fun to see things stay the same even when they change.

Believe it or not, the person who first taught me to embroider was my Dad. He is quit the crafty person.
When I was about 10 he came home with a couple of Sunset Embroidery Kits and we sat down and worked on them together.
I have loved to embroider ever since. I hope I win. Those patterns are cute, cute, cute.

Hello. My name is Camille and I'm an addict.
I became addicted to stitching when I was eight and wouldn't leave my poor mom alone while she was working on an embroidery project. The one she was doing was an incredibly difficult pattern for a pillow that matched her handmade quilt. But, she stopped what she was doing and found an apple pattern that I could do and patiently waited while I asked the million questions that eventually came up. I know she did it to get me out of her hair, but I have loved it since. I would love to win one of these patterns to make her something special as a thank you.
